A visit to the library at the south end of the park will treat you to some pictures of the land from the 1940's. The view from the top is quite nice, especially at sundown. Picnic tables and benches are scattered throughout the area so you can take a break or have lunch. 3 levels of trail difficulty challenge new walkers and depending on how you do it, seasoned walkers as well. The city of San Antonio leaves a lot to be desired, but they really do love their parks and it shows with this one. Walking all of the trails will give you better than 2 miles worth (my daily hike is 2.18 miles according to GPS). The trails are very good for the casual hiker and day walker. I do this one almost every day and its very enjoyable. What better way to enjoy a history lesson! This trail connects all five missions in San Antonio: The Alamo, Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. The Missions Hike And Bike Trail is situated along the San Antonio River. Reservations: (210) 688-9055 Hiking Location #9 San Antonio Missions Hike And Bike Trail Mission San Jose in San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, Texas They do have capacity limits so reservations are a good idea. There are 10 miles of trails with various degrees of difficulty, dinosaur tracks for the kids and camping as well. Government Canyon State Natural Area is another wonderful San Antonio nature area. Garner State Park is another great option. I do recommend you reserve a spot in advance especially on the weekend.
